Three Months on the Job …

SERTOMA Meeting, February 14, 2012 – Round Rock Police Chief Tim Ryle spoke at the Round Rock SERTOMA weekly meeting this morning to report on the state of affairs of Round Rock and with the Round Rock police force.   Chief Ryle comes to us just shy of three months on the job.  He was promoted to police chief on Nov. 7th, 2011.

SERTOMA members learned that we in Round Rock have some statistics to be proud of.  Round Rock has been ranked the 11th safest city in the country with over 100K residents, and we’re the 2nd safest town in Texas with a population of 100K.

Chief Ryle emphasized his commitment to make the service of our police force personal, approachable, and accessible.   Though not necessarily exclusive to Round Rock, the Round Rock Police Department places the officer’s names on their patrol cars, which is not a common practice in most police departments.  As each officer works in his or her respective area, the community gets to know a real person by name.  Chief Ryle wants his officers to build a relationship of trust with the citizens in their assigned areas.  It’s not just a badge, it’s a person, and hopefully a person you come to know and trust.

SERTOMA members asked the chief several questions after his brief overview.  One member inquired about the drug problems in the area, and asked about the increasing impact of Mexican drug cartels on the area.  Chief Ryle gave a break down of many things that had transpired in broader central Texas region over the past year.    He told of Round Rock’s participation with several federal agencies and programs to combat the trafficking of illegal drugs.  Last year, $1.2M of drugs were confiscated in Round Rock.

The chief was asked what we could do to help, and he emphasized that we needed to continue doing what we are doing, that is being involved with volunteerism, helping out in the community in tangible, hands-on ways.  He commended our participation in the “All Capabilities Park” along with other find civic groups, and for all of the good causes that SERTOMA helps in the Round Rock area.

Chief Ryle brought two key staff members with him, who are centrally involved with public relations and community affairs, officers Vinny Cherrone and Dee Carver.  Officer Vinny Cherrone was also accompanied by a lovely young lady, his daughter, Bailey Cherrone, who he had to take to school immediately after the meeting.

Thanks, also, for being a great dad.
